Lucas Giolito stepped on the mound for the Boston Red Sox, which was his first appearance in over 500 days. Giolito is coming to the Red Sox at a critical time, with the injury to Walker Buehler.
After his latest start with the Red Sox, Giolito sat down for an interview with Jordan Shusterman of Yahoo Sports, discussing his journey back from injury. After his six-inning outing, Giolito had strong feelings about his first five innings back from injury.
"I was pleased with the first five innings. I felt right back at home."
But in the sixth, things began to fall apart for Giolito. Afterwards, he acknowledged what went wrong.
"Unfortunately, the sixth inning is when I kind of lost it... hung a couple [of pitches] and paid for it."
His sixth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays is where his first start in over 500 days fell apart. Giolito allowed home runs to Daulton Varsho and Alejandro Kirk. The Red Sox lost 7-6, though Giolito wasn't on the hook for the loss.

It was Giolito's first start for the Red Sox after he signed a two-year, $37 million deal ahead of the 2024 season. Before the 2024 season began, he felt elbow discomfort and eventually had internal brace repair surgery, keeping him out all of 2024.
Now back on the mound, Giolito is where he feels most comfortable. At 30 years old, Giolito is back from injury and looking to make his mark on the Red Sox in 2025.
It'll be his ninth season playing in the Major Leagues, and while he may never reach elite levels again, Giolito has shown the ability to be a plus-starter in MLB.
Although his first start wasn't perfect, Giolito is grateful to be back on the mound and playing for a team again.
"I feel like I can be myself again, like I'm actually contributing. I'm on the team. I can be a true, real teammate."
Giolito will pitch in front of a home crowd when the Texas Rangers come to Boston to play the Red Sox. It'll be his first home start since 2023 and his second start since returning from injury.
