CHICAGO — It hasn’t been only the hits that have started to pile up for Caleb Durbin. It’s also the homers.
On Thursday, he cranked a two-run homer in the fourth inning that proved to be the difference for the Red Sox in their 2-1 victory over the White Sox, giving them a series sweep and extending their winning streak to six in a row.
The homer was Durbin’s ninth, which might not wow anyone. But when you consider that Durbin had just one homer through the end of May, his upturn in slugging the last five weeks begins to look more impressive.

“It’s a game of consistency,” said Durbin. “I’m capable of a lot more than I showed last year or showed in the past. I’m not close to my potential as far as those (power) numbers go. I’m just trying to stack good at-bats.”
While Durbin reconfigured his swing earlier this year to pull himself out of a horrendous start, he focused somewhat on bat speed, which he thought needed improvement.
“That’s an area where I could get better just as far as having a better approach and trying to do damage,” he said. “That’s been the case. It’s been good, the process has been good and it’s good to see the results starting to turn.”
A year ago, his rookie season, Durbin hit 11 homers for Milwaukee. Now with nine, he’s sure to pass last year’s total – perhaps before July is complete.
“I’m not going to put a number on (his home run potential),” said Durbin, “just because talk is cheap. You’ve got to go out and do it. I don’t think 20 is out of the question. But as I said, it’s a game of consistency. I was super inconsistent the first couple of months and I was really consistent (starting) last month up until now. So you try to keep that going throughout the course of the season.”
