ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Caleb Durbin did his best to get the Red Sox back into Wednesday’s game.

He went 3 for 4 and homered in the eighth and ninth innings but Boston couldn’t complete its comeback attempt. The Sox lost 7-5 to the Rays at Tropicana Field to suffer a three-game sweep.

It marked Durbin’s first career multi-homer game. But his performance got overshadowed by Boston finishing its road trip with its fourth loss in five games. The Sox are now 27-39, 12 games under .500.

“Off day tomorrow would be a good reset for sure, but then obviously you have to get something going at home,” Durbin said. “It’s not really a choice at this point.”

The Red Sox haven’t been able to get it going at Fenway Park all season. They will begin a six-game homestand on Friday. Boston is 10-21 at Fenway. They have won just one home series while losing eight and splitting one.

While the Sox have continued to play poorly into June with a 2-6 record this month, Durbin is trending in the right direction.

In June, Durbin is 9 for 27 (.333) with a .357 on-base percentage, .630 slugging percentage and four extra-base hits. Those numbers are a dramatic improvement from the first two months, when he batted .183 with a .250 on-base percentage and .280 slugging percentage.

He’s 15 for 44 (.341) dating back to May 28, around the time he began working with an outside hitting coach.

“Honestly, the last couple days felt really good,” Durbin said. “Felt like I was really getting good swings on the ball, and when I was going to hit them, it was going to be good results — not just feeling like I’m putting good swings on the ball, but trusting that the result would be good and trending in the right direction. But obviously still a lot of work to be done.”

Durbin said the biggest difference is “attacking the correct side of the ball.”

“I’m staying inside it,” Durbin said. “Even when you’re pulling, you have to attack the inside part of the ball to kind of get good spin. I’m not gonna hit it perfect every time, but that’s when your misses on the wrong side of the ball are still hits to left, or a little top spun, but they’re still hits. So for me, it’s just getting back to attacking the ball the right way, and the results have been better.”
