Real Madrid clear final hurdle in Mourinho’s much-awaited comeback

Real Madrid appear to be moving ever closer to bringing Jose Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabeu, with the club making significant progress in their efforts to secure the Portuguese coach’s arrival.

According to the latest information from AS, the financial aspects surrounding Mourinho’s departure from Benfica have now been settled, removing what had become the biggest obstacle in the process.

Although the €7 million release clause included in his contract expired earlier this week, Real Madrid have still managed to find common ground with Benfica regarding the compensation involved.

What’s the story?

The breakthrough is said to have come through the involvement of super-agent Jorge Mendes, whose mediation helped both clubs reach an agreement.

As a result, the path is now largely clear for Mourinho to return to Madrid.

Everything is now linked to the upcoming presidential election scheduled for June 7.

The latest development also suggests Benfica have softened their previous stance and abandoned their attempts to extract a larger payment from Real Madrid.

That has allowed negotiations to advance considerably and has placed Mourinho within touching distance of a sensational return to the Spanish capital.

The experienced manager is fully aware of the demands that come with managing Real Madrid and has already communicated his initial sporting vision to the club hierarchy.

As reported before, he has submitted a detailed assessment of the squad and identified several positions that require attention.

On that note, Defensive reinforcements appear to be a major priority, with the Portuguese coach believed to be targeting both centre-back positions as well as additions at right-back and left-back.

Midfield is another area he wants strengthened, with two new central midfielders viewed as important additions for the next phase of the project.
