Raynham's Brody Bumila is Texas bound.
On Saturday, July 11, the former Bishop Feehan ace, 2025-26 MaxPreps Male National Athlete of the Year and 2025-26 Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year was selected 89th overall by the Texas Rangers in the 2026 MLB Draft at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
The 6-foot-9 southpaw, who made national headlines and attracted hordes of MLB scouts all spring with a fastball that regularly topped triple digits, went 5-0, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and 14 walks while striking out 96 (including a Feehan record 20 batters on senior night in his lone complete game) in 44⅓ innings of work while working on a pitch and inning limit, leading the Shamrocks to an appearance in the MIAA Division 1 final.
If he signs, it could be some time before Bumila takes the mound for any of the Rangers' affiliates. As on Monday, July 6, he shared an MRI with MLB teams that showed he had suffered another injury to his UCL in his left throwing arm, which he previously had internal brace surgery on in 2025. If it requires surgery, Bumila could be sidelined for over a year.
Still, the 18-year-old's clear talent and potential was enough to convince the Rangers to take a chance on him, who will now look to work with Bumila to prepare for his return to the mound and a chance at his lifelong dream of pitching in the majors.
Bumila is the fourth Massachusetts athlete to be selected in the opening three rounds of major North American sports league's draft this summer. Brockton's AJ Dybansta was selected first overall in the 2026 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards on June 23, while in the 2026 NHL Draft on June 27, Norwell's Casey Mutryn was selected 38th overall by the Seattle Kraken and Needham's Rian Chudzinski was selected 82nd overall by the Anaheim Ducks.
The Rangers' farm system was ranked 27th overall by Baseball Americain its midseason rankings on Tuesday, July 7. The minor league affiliates of the Rangers, from lowest to highest, are the ACL Rangers (Rookie), Hickory Crawdads (A), Hub City Spartanburgers (Advanced A), Frisco RoughRiders (AA) and Round Rock Express (AAA).
Bumila committed to the University of Texas in 2024 and could still elect to join the Longhorns rather than sign with the Rangers. If he chooses to go the college route, he will not be eligible to be drafted again until after his 21st birthday in 2029. It would also mean Austin would be home to a pair of left-handed pitchers from the Greater Taunton area next year, with former Taunton High softball standout and 2023-24 Gatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year Sam Lincoln transferring to Texas softball from Texas Tech.
