On the surface, it might sound a little bold, and maybe even a little unrealistic. The more one thinks about it, however, the more it makes sense for the Baltimore Ravens to at least explore a trade framework involving Dexter Lawrence and Rashod Bateman. To be clear, the Ravens have given no indication they are moving on from Bateman. Still, trade theories haven’t fully disappeared, and with news surfacing out of John Harbaugh's New York Giants involving Lawrence’s situation, the timing at least makes the idea worth a conversation.
Bateman’s 2025 Ravens season didn't meet expectations after his contract extension. That doesn’t mean a bounce-back isn’t coming. Nothing could be further from the truth. He also has trade value. The Ravens don't seem interested in moving on, but who's to say they wouldn't do so if it meant they had a shot at landing Dexter Lawrence?
A change of scenery could help unlock a better version of him sooner rather than later. The New York Giants are thin at wide receiver beyond Malik Nabers, who is working his way back from injury. With additional offensive concerns piling up (remember that Cam Skattebo is also working his way back from injury), Bateman could quickly step into a meaningful role there.
For Baltimore, the motivation is much clearer. The Ravens need reinforcement along the defensive interior. There is still uncertainty surrounding Nnamdi Madubuike, and while the addition of Trey Hendrickson addressed the edge rusher position, the middle of the defensive line remains a question worth answering aggressively. That’s where Lawrence enters the conversation.
Even in what was considered a down year, Lawrence remains one of the more disruptive interior defenders in football. Plugging him into Baltimore’s front would immediately elevate the unit and change the tone of the defense. It may not be the most conventional idea, and pulling it off would require serious negotiation.
Still, if both teams are addressing areas of need, this is the type of bold swing that could benefit everyone involved. At the very least, it’s a conversation worth having. It's hard to deny that as a fact.
