The Baltimore Ravens have controlled much of the first half against the Philadelphia Eagles, taking a 7-0 lead into halftime Saturday night at M&T Bank Stadium. The scoreboard does not fully reflect Baltimore's offensive advantage. The Ravens have generated 233 total yards compared with Philadelphia's 81, picked up 14 first downs to the Eagles' two and averaged 6.7 yards per play.
Rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano has provided one of the biggest stories. Fagnano completed 11 of 14 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, although he also threw an interception. His touchdown went to fellow rookie Ja'Kobi Lane, who continued his impressive preseason debut with three catches for 38 yards and a score.
Lane's touchdown came on a 15-yard connection with Fagnano and followed a 19-yard reception earlier in the game. Lamar Jackson praised Lane's aggressiveness and ability to attack the football during a sideline interview, saying the rookie's ceiling is extremely high. Baltimore's passing game has been efficient beyond Lane. Matthew Hibner leads the Ravens with four catches for 52 yards, while Devontez Walker and Elijah Sarratt have each added three receptions for more than 30 yards.
Tyler Huntley also has been effective after taking over at quarterback. He has completed 6 of 7 passes for 76 yards and has added a different dimension to the offense with his mobility.
The Ravens have not been perfect. Fagnano's interception prevented another scoring opportunity, and Tyler Loop missed a field goal. Baltimore has also been held to only 46 rushing yards.
Still, the first-half production has been encouraging. The Ravens have moved the ball consistently, created explosive passing plays and watched several young players make their cases.
For a preseason opener, Baltimore could hardly ask for a more productive first half.
