The Texas Rangers have made a flurry of roster moves ahead of their Saturday afternoon tilt with the Atlanta Braves.
Most notably, the Rangers will be getting reliever Jakob Junis back from the 15-day Injured List, where he has been sidelined with a right hip impingement since July 4.
Before his injury, Junis was the Rangers’ higest leverage reliver behind All-Star closer Jacob Latz.
After signing with Texas in the offseason, Junis has posted a 2.80 ERA, a 1.019 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts in 35.1 innings.
Junis’ return comes at a much-needed time for the Rangers bullpen, which has been running thin for most of the summer.
Having Junis back in the mix will take some of the load off Peyton Gray, who has been successfully bearing a lot of leverage innings of late.
To make room for Junis on the roster, Texas has optioned Emiliano Teodo back to Triple-A Round Rock. Teodo made his Major League debut on Friday in Atlanta, going 1.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks.
Teodo certainly showcased the velocity and movement that give Texas hope he can contribute to the big-league club at some point. He was just unable to hit the strike zone consistently throughout his outing.
Needing some more coverage out of the bullpen for the remainder of the series, the Rangers also swapped out Gavin Collyer for Jose Corniell.
Collyer also pitched in Friday’s game, allowing four earned runs in just one inning of work. Given that the young right-hander has plenty of minor-league options, it’s easy for the Rangers to use him for coverage swaps.
As for Corniell, when and if he appears for Texas, it will be just his second big-league appearance of the season.
In other non-MLB news, a pair of Rangers left-handed pitchers will make another round of rehab starts on Saturday.
Jordan Montgomery will take the ball for Triple-A Round Rock, and Cody Bradford will toe the rubber for Double-A Frisco.
There is a chance this will be Montgomery’s last minor-league rehab appearance before he rejoins the Rangers. Bradford is still a-ways away after he suffered a setback in May.
Once both of them get back and, eventually, when Jack Leiter comes back from his injury, the Rangers will have to figure out how to best utilize their newfound pitching depth.
