The Texas Rangers faced another early pitching setback Monday night when starter MacKenzie Gore exited during the second inning of a 7-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies because of left lat tightness.

The injury forced Texas into an unplanned bullpen game for the second time within the past week, putting immediate pressure on a relief corps already tasked with covering significant innings recently.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker described the move as precautionary following the game, though Gore was expected to undergo additional imaging on Tuesday to determine the severity of the issue.

Before leaving the contest, Gore struggled to establish command in the opening inning. The left-hander surrendered two runs on three hits and two walks while throwing 28 pitches.

Although the outing was brief, there were signs that something may have been off physically as both his four-seam fastball and sinker registered lower velocity than his season averages.

Despite the abrupt exit, the Rangers remained optimistic that the injury would not develop into a major concern. Gore had entered the game coming off arguably his strongest performance of the season after tossing eight innings of one-run baseball against the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 12 at Globe Life Field.

That inconsistency has largely defined Gore’s first season in Texas. Acquired from the Washington Nationals during the offseason in exchange for a five-prospect package, the former top prospect has flashed high-end ability at times but has also struggled to maintain rhythm throughout the year.

Following Monday’s abbreviated outing, Gore owns a 4.78 ERA on the season.

Once Gore departed, Texas pieced together the remaining seven innings with a committee of relievers. Peyton Gray, Jalen Beeks, Gavin Collyer, Cole Winn, and Jakob Junis combined to keep the Rangers competitive despite difficult circumstances.

However, defensive miscues complicated matters throughout the night. Errors committed by Josh Jung and Ezequiel Duran contributed to unearned runs, preventing Texas from fully stabilizing the game after Gore’s departure.

Even with the bullpen effort, the Rangers could not overcome the early deficit and defensive lapses, dropping another close contest while anxiously awaiting additional information regarding Gore’s health heading into the rest of the series.
