The St. Louis Rams have no plans to fire coach Jeff Fisher after this season and would like him to return for the 2016 season, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

But it is not known whether Fisher wants to return.

Fisher, who signed a five-year, $35 million contract in 2012, is under contract through the 2016 season. Fisher's record in St. Louis is 25-35-1.

The Rams are 5-8 on the season and play Thursday night against the Buccaneers. St. Louis defeated the Lions 21-14 on Sunday to end a five-game losing streak in which it lost by 24 points three times during the skid.

Fisher fired offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti on Dec. 7 and promoted Rob Boras to the position.

Setting up for a new coach for their first year in L.A.?

the longer he's there, the better for us because his team's routinely underachieve.

They could really take off in the years to come, they have a good defense and specials teams. They just need to hire a top-notch offensive coord/asst. head coach.

Time for their end of season march towards mediocrity. They do the same thing every year it seems like, start off decent, slump in the middle of the season, and play better towards the end to inch towards an 8-8 mark.

Jeff Fisher, 6 playoff appearances in like 20 years of head coaching. Yet people still think he's a good coach.

Note that all successful teams have an excellent quarterback and all the rest of the teams don't. That is what the Rams and everybody else needs. I hope we all appreciate what we're watching here in town right now. We're exposed daily to it so it may be less apparent to us, but Carson has already had the best season by any Cardinal quarterback ever, and has seven games to go. We're witnessing what we always dreamed of - enjoy.

That makes it even more important to finding this replacement. He may be good for a couple more years but that may be it.

Not that Fisher is great by any means, but here are his QBs while he has been coaching the Rams (I should also include the OCs...)

2015 Nick Foles (11) / Case Keenum (3)
2014 Austin Davis (8) / Shaun Hill (8)
2013 Kellen Clemens (9) / Sam Bradford (7)
2012 Sam Bradford (16)

Whiz, Green or McGinnis could have gone 5-11 with this list :)

Phil Rivers, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, Joe Flacco, and possibly Matt Stafford would like to quibble with the second half of your statement. Trent Dilfer, Alex Smith, and Colin Kraepernick and a few others might take issue with the first half.

But certainly, having an excellent QB is a huge factor for success, if not by itself sufficient.

They aren't going to LA...The league is doing everything possible to approve the Carson Stadium project and they are offering the Rams more $$ for a stadium in St. Louis.

As for keeping Fischer? God has answered my prayers. With him there, we can be guaranteed they will stay steeped in mediocrity.

Well, OK, but God wants you to spell Fisher correctly.

+1

You hit the nail on the head. He's sticking with Fisher because they NOT moving to LA. He doesn't want to eat Fisher's salary with his team playing in that dump in St. Louis

If they were moving to LA I think Fisher would be canned,

I hope Fisher stays too, guarantees the Rams mediocrity.

I've concluded that he is basically Buddy Ryan with far better press skills

Teams play the Uber aggressive D, but also undisciplined and cheap

Offense seems like an afterthought.
