The Los Angeles Rams were the last NFL team with a void at offensive coordinator after losing Mike LaFleur to the Arizona Cardinals, but they finally made a decision on Friday. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Rams are promoting pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase to offensive coordinator.
And there’s a twist. They’re also promoting Dave Ragone to co-offensive coordinator, while still keeping him as their QBs coach.
Scheelaase interviewed for multiple head coaching jobs this offseason despite never being an offensive coordinator, but he was passed over by each team. Instead, he’ll now get a chance to be Sean McVay’s offensive coordinator, a job that has led each of his predecessors becoming a head coach.
Scheelhaase, 35, is one of the top young coaches in the NFL, and is almost sure to become a head coach at some point in the not-too-distant future. This role as the Rams' offensive coordinator sets him up for success, just as it did for Matt LaFleur, Kevin O'Connell, Liam Coen and Mike LaFleur before him.
