The Los Angeles Rams usually don't play their top players during the NFL preseason. The Rams tend to sit their starters and even some of their top second-string players.
Los Angeles faces a decision on backup quarterback Stetson Bennett, a two-time national champion with the Georgia Bulldogs. The Rams need to decide if they will play Bennett in their preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Aug. 15.
Rams coach Sean McVay plans to play first-round rookie quarterback Ty Simpson against the Chiefs, but he is undecided on Bennett, which is a good sign for Bennett. If Bennett does not play, then that likely means he has the clear upper hand in the backup quarterback battle.
"Ty Simpson definitely will (play). I haven't decided on Stetson Bennett yet," McVay said. When later asked about Bennett's status and when he will decide if he plays, McVay added that he is "just really seeing established positions, stuff like that" to make the decision.
Bennett has been getting the majority of the second-team reps when NFL MVP Matthew Stafford practices. He gets first-team reps when Stafford misses practice for routine maintenance.
Last preseason, Bennett got some valuable experience as the Rams' quarterback. He played the entire game in the Rams' first two preseason contests (he was the Rams' No. 3 quarterback at the time). The Rams played their No. 4 quarterback in the final preseason game. If last preseason is any indication, then Bennett could sit the entire preseason, but it should be noted that Bennett is a much less experienced backup quarterback than last year's backup Jimmy Garoppolo.
