The Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets will have a new quarterback to target in free agency this offseason.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Las Vegas Raiders are releasing Geno Smith, barring a trade. Smith is being released with two years left on his $75 million contract.
"ESPN sources: the Raiders are releasing last season’s starting quarterback Geno Smith, barring a trade before the start of the new league year," Schefter reported.
Zero surprise here, as Smith was awful last season and the Raiders are set to draft Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick.
As bad as Smith was last season, it is worth noting he had a lackluster supporting cast, including a bad wide receivers room, a shaky offensive line and an incompetent play-caller.
It's possible he could return to his Pro Bowl ways in a better situation, and teams like the Steelers, Vikings and Jets could be interested, especially with Smith likely to only cost the veteran's minimum.
We still have no answer from Aaron Rodgers, and if he decides to retire, the Steelers will almost certainly look to add a veteran quarterback.
The Vikings are for sure in the market for a veteran quarterback this offseason as an insurance policy for J.J. McCarthy. SportsBoom's Jason La Canfora reports that the Vikings are actually interested in Smith.
The Jets, who don't have a sure starter after Justin Fields struggled mightily last year, are also reportedly considering Smith in free agency, per SNY's Connor Hughes.
