Press conferences began today at this year's Scouting Combine. Among the first to step behind the podium was Raiders GM John Spytek. There, the elephant in the room took center stage -- the status of Maxx Crosby.

Crosby has been the subject of trade rumors since he very publicly showed his displeasure at being sat down for the final two games of the season due to a meniscus tear which he believed he could have played through.

Since that time, if Crosby had put that behind him, he has had ample opportunities to say so, but at every turn, he has declined to say. Thus keeping the rumor mill churning. To be fair Spytek hasn't completely shut it down either. Though perhaps there are encouraging signs.

One of the first questions he received Tuesday in Indianapolis was whether he expects Crosby to be with the Raiders, he said "I do, yes" and going on to say he is confident Crosby will remain in Las Vegas.

"Maxx [Crosby] is an elite player," said Spytek on why he is confident Crosby will remain. "I've been very upfront from the start when I got here that we're in the business of having really good players on the team, and we need a lot more of them. And it's hard to build a great team without elite players."

Spytek went on to insist he and Maxx have a great relationship and that they talk all the time. And in that he's comfortable where Maxx's head is at with regard to whether he wants to remain with the Raiders.

But then that question came up again as to whether Crosby is untouchable. And again Spytek's response left that door wide open.

"We're always listening," said Spytek.

So, it seems while neither Crosby nor the Raiders are saying outwardly that either side wants a split, both sides are open to the idea. Which means this will continue to be a fluid situation for the next few weeks leading up to the start of the new league year when trades can occur.

That goes especially for this week where coaches, GMs, owners, and agents wander the halls in Indianapolis and strike up conversations about potential trade commodities. None bigger than Crosby.
