LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — JR Tollett delivered six strong innings and Louisiana’s bullpen held firm late as the Ragin’ Cajuns slipped past UC San Diego, 4-3, on Sunday to claim the weekend series and cap a 4-1 week.

Three of Louisiana’s four wins this week were decided by a single run.

The Cajuns (9-3) wasted no time getting on the board. Donovan LaSalle doubled in the first inning and later scored on a single by Lee Amedee. After a walk and double steal put two runners in scoring position, Colt Brown’s groundout brought home another run to give Louisiana a 2-0 lead.

Louisiana extended the advantage to 3-0 in the second. Maddox Mandino singled and eventually came around to score following two UC San Diego throwing errors.

Tollett was sharp early, allowing just one hit through five innings. The Tritons (4-6) broke through in the sixth with three straight one-out hits, capitalizing on a Louisiana throwing error and an RBI single by JC Allen to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Cajuns responded in the bottom half. Mandino singled, stole second and advanced on another throwing error before scoring on LaSalle’s groundout to make it 4-2.

UC San Diego kept the pressure on late. The Tritons pushed across a run in the eighth to pull within one, and brought the tying run aboard in the ninth. But reliever Cody Brasch worked around a two-out walk and struck out Alex Leopard to secure his second save of the season.

Louisiana has now won eight of its last nine games.

The Cajuns will face reigning national champion LSU Tigers baseball (11-1) on Wednesday night to close out a nine-game homestand.
