I don't know that the hit was WAY late. It was late, but it wasn't particularly vicious, nor was it AS late as the announcers made it out to be.

It was the right call, but it wasn't as horrible as the announcers made it seem.

It was a love tap. The reason Kitna fell down was because one of our linemen rolled up to him and knocked him down. The push from Thompson wasn't enough to make him move 6 inches.

Thompson was coming full speed and took two full steps after Kitna threw the ball. The hit was not that nasty, but looking at it in slow motion you'd think he had time to write a novel from the time Kitna threw to the time he hit him. In fullspeed motion, it was bang-bang IMO. However, the refs will call that play everytime and Thompson needed to make a little more of an effort to stop himself.

He had plenty of time to side step at the very least. Totally uncalled for and just plain stupid! But we won so who cares

It was late for sure but not vicious. In light of the pick return for big yardage it looks even worse. I think it was a byproduct of overall agressiveness by the defense. He wanted to make a play and get the sack but just didn't let up when he should have. Pretty hard to turn the switch off when it's early and you're all "geeked up"--I love that term! LOL I like that kind of emotion and agressiveness at this point in the season--it is needed. I don't agree with a late hit but I can see where he was coming from, ya know?

It did raise one issue, though.

If Ray had hit Kitna after the ball had actually been picked off, could the hit on Kitna been considered "blocking" on the interception return.

I would have liked to have seen the split screen on this play to witness the sequence of pick and late hit.

True, but then again, Raynoch did not have "blocking" on his mind. I'll bet dollars-to-doughnuts that he didn't even know that the pass had been intercepted when he hit Kitna.

In my opinion, he wasn't too egregious of a hit. He took two (maybe two-and-a-half) steps before hitting Kitna, and the hit wasn't all that hard, or helmet-to-helmet, or anything like that. If Raynoch had wanted to, he could have knocked out Kitna, but he didn't.

I may be a homer, but it was a blown call in a long line of crappy officiating for the entire day.

Raynoch said that he thought Kitna didn't release the ball, but instead pulled back as a pump fake.

To my untrained eye, it was a late hit and a good call by the officials. Too bad he spoiled Hills nice return.

If Ray hit Kitna just after he threw the ball, but before the ball reached the Hill, it would have been prior to the pick, and the penalty would be legitimate (Odds were 99% that this is what happened - I was just curious).

That's what I don't understand. If Kitna was hit after Hill snagged the ball, wouldn't Ray be allowed then to consider Kitna a would-be tackler and fair game to be "blocked?" Or if the ball was tipped and considered a "free ball", wouldn't Kitna also be considered fair game?

I'm not saying this is what happened. I'm just curious about what the league rules are, and a tiny bit curious about the sequence of "hit" and pick.

I think most here have it pegged pretty accurately. It was a good call. I think Raynoch did make a "half-hearted" attempt to ease up, but it was basically dumb on his part. The flag was justified, but neither was it a "vicious" hit. Kind of like the stupid "kick" Wilson delivered last week.

And Kitna certainly acted the scene out very well.

I think the refs applied the “spirit” of the rule here----

I am convinced that Ray hit Kitna well after the interception. This is based on the fact that Kitna threw about a ten yard bullet and the ball didn’t have to travel far, and that Thompson hit him fairly late.

However, Thompson did hit him as a pass rusher – not a blocker. Had Thompson hit him like a blocker – i.e. reacted to the pick, and then drilled Kitna, you would have had the post possession personal foul call.

As I recall, the Cardinals benefited from that same ruling last year against the Lions – Plummer threw a pick (and was returned deep into Card territory) but got roughed on the play, and the Cardinals kept the ball and eventually won.
