I just finished this book. I highly recommend it to ALL especially to you Bob(jw7) and any REAL dog lover! I really think this book would move and fascinate you. I loved it from beginning to end! If you would like I can mail it to you. It was given to me and not on kindle.

Synopsis: Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, ZoË, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with ZoË at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

Based upon Shane's rec, I just finished it this weekend. It is an amazing book.

And it isn't really about dogs or racing (although those are the key foundations of the story). It is just a very well written book that is VERY emotional.

It makes you happy, sad, laugh, cry, and get super pissed off and cheer. Just an awesome book.

Shane did not post this thread. I split it from the books thread because it is such a moving book that I would like to hear more feedback.

Good book (I read it on Shane's recommendation, too).

I wasn't prepared for where it went, but it was very good.

My wife read it last year after our dog passed. She cried every night. I can't bring myself to read it.

Too bad. It is not in any way a book about canine death. It is a book about how someone conquers insane challenges and overcomes.

I can see why your wife cried. It is incredibly emotional. But it is not about dogs.

I disagree. It's about a lot of things, and one of them is the bond this dog has with his master and his family.

I can see that. The dog bond was very important to the book.

I just didn't come away from it as the main plot thread, although there were many about family relationships and challenges.

Still one of my fav books.

I read it on the plane to/from Houston this week; quick read, entertaining. First book I've read in its entirety in at least 5 years.

Shane mailed me his copy of the book, so if anyone else would like to read it, I'd be happy to mail it off to you!

I liked it; I don't think as much as you & jw7 did, but I did like it. Thank you for sending it to me! It was great to read on the plane; time passed very quickly.
