Question on NCAA record keeping.

How long has the NCAA been keeping stats on sacks? The reason I ask is last year Freeney set the new record only to have it broken this year by Suggs with 24.

Bruce Smith had 24 sacks in 1983, his senior year at VaTech; but, sack stats were not kept back then.

Does anyone know what year they started keeping track of sacks officially?

I am pretty sure it was 2 years ago that they officially stated keeping records.
