Tom Bischof entered this preseason with something to prove, and so far, the Bayern Munich midfielder has done a pretty good job of making people take notice.
What makes his recent performances particularly interesting is that Bischof is not suddenly appearing out of nowhere. He has long been regarded as one of Germany’s top prospects in his age group, even if that reputation has sometimes been forgotten as he has worked to establish himself at Bayern Munich.
Last season, Bischof showed a willingness to put the team ahead of himself. He was asked to play out of position at times and did not complain. Instead, he embraced the responsibility and gave Vincent Kompany another option whenever the team needed him.
Now, there could be an added edge to his motivation.
Bischof did not make Germany’s World Cup squad, and while that disappointment will certainly sting for a while, it can also provide fuel. At his age, there is plenty of time to earn another opportunity with the national team. The best way to do that is to continue performing at a high level for Bayern Munich.
This preseason, Bischof has looked confident, composed, and increasingly comfortable in the midfield. He appears determined to show that he belongs in the conversation when Bayern Munich’s biggest matches arrive.
