A Maryland man who became the first quadruple amputee to compete professionally in the American Cornhole League was arrested Monday as a fugitive in the shooting death of a passenger in his car.
Dayton Webber, 27, faces murder and other charges in the killing of Bradrick Michael Wells, also 27, authorities said. The incident occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Sunday in La Plata, a suburban Charles County community south of Baltimore.
According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Webber was driving with Wells in the front passenger seat and two other people in the back when the group began arguing. Webber allegedly shot Wells, pulled over, and asked the remaining passengers to help remove the body. They refused, got out of the car, and fled, flagging down officers nearby to report the shooting.
Webber drove away with the body still inside, authorities said. About two hours later, a resident in nearby Charlotte Hall reported finding a body in a yard. Investigators identified it as Wells.
Deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Webber. His car was later located at a gas station in Charlottesville, Virginia, roughly 150 miles away. Officers found him at a nearby hospital, where he had gone for treatment of an unspecified medical issue. He was taken into custody upon discharge by Albemarle County police and is awaiting extradition to Charles County.
The sheriff’s office said Webber, Wells, and the other passengers were all known to each other. No motive has been released.
The American Cornhole League issued a brief statement on social media on Monday.
“This is an extremely serious matter and our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells,” it said. “At this time, this remains an active legal situation. We respect the judicial process and will not comment on specific allegations or details while proceedings are ongoing.”
Webber lost his hands and feet as a 10-month-old after a severe bacterial infection led to sepsis. He went on to compete in wrestling and football as a child before focusing on cornhole. He signed a professional contract in 2021, was drafted by the American Cornhole League, and became its first quadruple-amputee player. He won the Maryland state championship in 2020, competed in world championships, and was profiled by ESPN in 2023.

In that feature, Webber described his approach to life.“Something I’ve been doing my whole life is overcoming things that people didn’t think I could,” he said, The Guardian reported.
He added, “If you put your mind to it, anything is possible. The world won’t wait.”
