It takes a lot to surprise reigning state champion Connor Feehan out on the tennis court, but it happened Thursday.
The Quad City Tennis Club unveiled its new grass courts.
“I mean this one of a kind,” Feehan said. “It’s the most amazing place that I’ve ever played tennis and I feel like everyone from all across the country should come here, honestly, not just the QC. It’s pretty amazing that they can have not one but three of them.”
Chris Ontiveros, president of the Quad City Tennis Club, had the idea back in 2023 when he visited the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club.
“I thought, ‘Why not us?’ It’s actually very humbling, but it’s also exciting, fulfilling,” Ontiveros said.
The next obstacle was figuring out proper maintenance.
“It’s a living, breathing surface, but golf course guys do it every day and so we networked with some golf course superintendents, some other best practice people and figured out how to do this,” Ontiveros said.
There’s also a health-related benefit to playing on grass.
“I think a well-maintained grass court will help prevent injuries, especially in our lower extremities like tendonitis or recurrent joint pain moving forward for our athletes,” said Kelly Krei, a physician at MercyOne Genesis.
The new courts are a dream turned into a reality, and proving that if you build it, people will come.
“It’s pretty amazing, honestly. Like, I’ve been seeing it out here for a year or so and I’ve been waiting to try it out,” Feehan said. “I’ve seen it at Wimbledon and I wanted to get on it ever since they planted the seed.”
