Drew:

Gooden’s career felt typical of the Danny Hope era. At times, he looked like the best player on the field; other times, not so much. The ability was there, but the consistency never arrived. I specifically remember being confused when Hope brought the long-time starter off the bench as a senior to make way for Ryan Russell (to be fair, Russell ended up having NFL talent).

For me, the last game of Gooden’s career told the story. He played the best game of his career against Western Michigan, helping Danny Hope’s squad pull out a 37-32 win, and then rode off into the sunset. He was a good player for Hope and the Boilermakers, but like many players in the Hope era, could never quite get over the hump.
