Punahou rising junior Alexa Takai took home medalist honors with a 5-under 67 to earn one of two spots at the U.S. Girls’ Junior qualifying at Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai on Monday.
Haein Shin of South Korea was the second qualifier with a 4-under 68. Twenty-eight girls competed in the single-day event. Takai, who won the state title as a sophomore last month, qualified for the second year in a row. Takai and Shin will compete in the 77th U.S. Girls Junior Championship at Old Chatham Golf Course in North Carolina on July 13-18.
Also Monday, 43 boys competed for two spots in the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying, with South Korea’s Mingi Kim earning medalist honors by shooting a 4-under 68. Japan’s Riku Takase, who shot a 71, won in a three-person playoff to earn the second spot.
The 78th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be held at Saucon Valley in Pennsylvania on July 20-25.
5 Rainbows named Academic All-District
Five University of Hawaii baseball players — senior John Alkire II; juniors Tate Shimao and Tsubasa Tomii, and sophomores Grant Garman and Jake Redding — earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors, UH announced Tuesday.
The award recognizes a combination of excellence on the diamond and in the classroom. The five selections set a UH baseball program record for a single season. The Rainbows finished fourth in the Big West this season and qualified for the conference postseason tournament.
2 Silverswords earn academic honors
Two members of the Chaminade baseball team — infielder Taylor Ayala and pitcher Brennen Panis of Aiea High — were named to the Division II College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team, the school announced Tuesday.
To be recognized on this Academic All-District team, candidates must be at least a sophomore both academically and athletically, have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 and have played in either 90% or have started in 66% of their team’s contests. Pitchers need to have at least 17 appearances or pitched 35 innings.
