Matt Rempe never played golf in high school.

The 2006 St. Mary Catholic Central graduate focused on other sports.

Rempe became “addicted” to golf after graduation.

He celebrated the summer solstice in 20024 by playing 126 holes – seven complete 18-hole rounds – in one day at Monroe Golf & Country Club.

Now, he is sharing his passion with young players.

Rempe has taken over the boys golf team at SMCC.

“It’s been a good transition for me after doing a lot of youth football, baseball and basketball,” he said. “It’s good to be around the kids. The boys are excited.”

More than 20 boys tried out the team. That was too many to effectively use SMCC’s time on the course, so cuts had to be made.

“The biggest concern when you do that is whether they still will want to come out the following year,” he said. “But they are sticking with it. Five or six of them are going out to Old Town (Golf and Sportland) on their own two or three times a week.”

Rempe is one of four new coaches in the Monroe County Region this season.

Longtime basketball coach Jay Haselschwerdt is taking over Dundee, Eric Drummonds is the new boss at Monroe and Matt Walline has taken the reins at Milan.

Previews of all of the Monroe County Region teams follow.
