The time has arrived to announce the 2025 Providence Journal Winter All-State teams.
No one covers more high school sports than The Providence Journal, which allowed us to see all of Rhode Island’s best athletes. That’s the fun part of the job. The difficult part is picking our first- and second-team athletes in their respective sport.
Some sports are easier than others. Sports that hold individual championships and selections were made prioritizing performance at their respective RIIL final events.
Selections for team-based sports require more conversation. Athletes were selected based on in-person evaluations, statistics, conversations with various sport sources, postseason performance and other factors, including the coaches' postseason awards.
Teams were selected positionally. There is only one goalie in hockey and our All-State teams reflect the positions you would see on the court or ice. It can lead to difficult decisions, but we believe it's important to honor all the positions, not just a select few.
Our goal is to try to put as much work and effort into our selections as the athletes we’ve chosen put into their respective sport.
So while putting together The Providence Journal All-State teams can be tough, it’s nothing compared to what these athletes have done to get to this level and we’re happy to honor the best Rhode Island has to offer.
Forcier entered the 2024-25 season as the top returning forward in the state. And he showed why he had that title. The senior led Prout to a runner-up finish in the state championship after compiling a 14-goal, 14-assist regular season. As all great players do, Forcier turned it up a notch in the playoffs and scored another six goals and added four assists.
Kelsey earns his first Providence Journal All-State nod with an 11-goal, eight-assist season for Barrington. The Eagle forward was the third leading scorer in Division I and nearly led Barrington to an upset over La Salle in the first round of the D-I playoffs.
Stevens led Hendricken in points this season with 11 goals and 11 assists. He built on a 20-goal season as a freshman and won his second championship as the Hawks outlasted Prout in a thrilling triple overtime finish.
Garofalo has been a mainstay on La Salle’s blue line the last four seasons. He made the Journal’s second team as a sophomore and earned a top defensive spot in his final year. He finished with three goals and eight assists this season.
Some All-Staters just have the clutch gene and that is Tillinghast’s calling card. The senior scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime of the state championship against Prout. He also tallied the OT winner vs. La Salle in the 2024 Frozen Four. Tillinghast always finds himself in the right place and that’s a testament to his preparation. He managed four goals and 12 assists this winter.
For the second straight season, Evangelista claims the title of top goalie in the state. The Crusaders' netminder finished with a 96% save percentage and a 1.25 goals-against average to lead the South County program. Prout will certainly miss its All-State goalie, but the opposition will be happy he’s graduating.
