Prep track and field: Latest Hall class to be inducted at Pete Culicerto Hall of Fame Invitational

A big moment for area track and field will have its annual day on Friday.

Woodrow Wilson will host the Pete Culicerto Hall of Fame Invitational on the Pete Culicerto Track at Van Meter Stadium. Field events will start at 4:30 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m.

During the break, the Woodrow Wilson/Stratton Track and Field Hall of Fame Class of 2025 will be inducted. Among those to be honored will be:

Stephon Ross. Ross will be adding his second Hall of Fame inclusion of the year — he was inducted into the Raleigh County Wrestling Hall of Fame in February. Ross was a member of Woodrow’s 1987 state championship team and was on the state champion shuttle hurdle relay team. He went on to play football at Concord and later received his doctorate degree in Psychology and Criminology and Justice Studies from the University of Arizona Global Campus. Ross recently retired as a federal air marshal.

Greg “Buckwheat” Davis. Davis was a member of Woodrow’s first state championship team in 1977. He ran in the 440, 880 and 4x400 and 4x880 relays. He went on compete in cross country and outdoor and indoor track at St. Augustine’s, and also participated in ROTC and was a military officer.

Shawn Bartram. Bartram was a member of the 4x400 relay team that won the 1996 state championship, and was also fifth in the 1,600. In 1995, he finished ninth in the state cross country meet and placed sixth at 112 pounds at the state wrestling tournament. He went on to run cross country and track at Marshall University, where he was a member of the 1997 Southern Conference champion.

Nikko Wesley. In 2012, Wesley was a member of the 4x400 relay team that set the state meet record with a time of 42.46 seconds. He was also on the 4x800 relay team that won a state title in 2011 and finished runner-up in 2012, both of which stand as school records. He was third in the 200 and fourth in the 100 in 2012. Wesley attended Glenville State and is currently a truck driver.

Vince Culicerto. The son of the namesake for both the track and the event, Culicerto joined Ross on the 1987 state championship team, for which he competed on the 4x800 relay. He was a two-time 800 regional champion. As a coach, Culicerto has won 12 regional championships and was named the 2014 West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year. He has been a West Virginia track official for eight years.

Maura Arline Johnson. Johnson is a two-time state champion, a member of the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams that won it all in 2004. She also ran the 100 and 200. She attended Concord University and is currently the COO of Visit Southern WV.

Zachary Tilley. Tilley was a member of the 2011 state champion 4x100 and 4x200 teams that set what at the time were state records. They still stand as school records. He also competed in the 100 and 200. Tilley is also a member of the Beckley Football Hall of Fame. He went on to attend West Virginia University and is currently employed as a nurse.

Coach Devell Williams. Williams has worn many hats at Woodrow Wilson, not just as a coach but also a special needs educator, assistant principal and athletic director. He was selected Coalfield Conference Coach of the Year in 1994, 1995, 2001 and 2004. His 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams won state championships in 2004.

Jacob Meadows. Meadows was a member of the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams that won state championships in 2011. Their times had been state records and still stand as school records. The same group was state runner-up in both events in 2012. He ran track at Concord University, where he won the Mountain East Conference championship in the 400 in 2015. The following year he was a member of the 1,600 relay team that won a conference title. He currently is a pursuing a degree in nursing in Sumter, S.C.

Rachel Rhinehart Davis. Davis was an all-stater in the 200 and 400 and was also a member of the 4x400, 4x800 and 4x1,600 state championship teams. She went to run in the 200 and 400 at Marshall University. She received a bachelor’s degree from Marshall and a masters degree from Florida International. She is operations supervisor at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Larry English. A 1962 graduate of Stratton High School, English finished third in the 100-yard dash and second in 200 and was a member of the 4x400 relay team that finished second at the state meet. He was also second in the broad jump and a member of the mile relay team that placed second. English went on to the United State Air Force and was on the team that ran against U.S. Olympians Tommy Smith and John Carlos in the San Jose State Relays in 1964. He attended Beckley College, Morris Harvey (now the University of Charleston) and Marshall University and went to work as the disabilities coordinator at Beckley Head Start.

Coach Bob Moseley. Moseley, who passed away in December, graduated from Glen Rogers High School, Class of 1958, where he was active in high school sports and proud to be a "Glen Rogers Owl.” A retired school teacher, Coach Moseley spent years teaching at Woodrow Wilson High School, where he mentored many students, especially in track and field.

The region’s top performers will be at Friday’s meets. Joining the host Flying Eagles will be boys and girls teams from Bluefield, Greenbrier West, Independence, James Monroe, Liberty, Maranatha Christian (Va.), Midland Trail, Oak Hill, PikeView, Princeton, Richwood, Shady Spring, Summers County, Westside and Wyoming East.
