Apr. 15—MORGANTOWN — Baseball Morgantown (10-6): MHS is ranked No. 8 in week two of the MetroNews power rankings after winning three of its last four games.
To go along with a 19-4 victory over University last Wednesday, the Mohigans defeated Class AAAA No. 1 Jefferson 3-0 on Saturday morning, followed by a significant 3-0 regional win (the tenth of the season over John Marshall in a weather-shortened, five-inning contest.
MHS will travel to Linsly on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. meeting.
University (6-9): The Hawks defeated No. 4 Spring Valley 6-5 on Friday before falling to No. 2 Hurricane 6-4 on the same day. UHS then lost to George Washington 4-0 on Saturday in the Mon County Classic but returned strong Monday against Wheeling Park, taking a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning before a weather delay. The makeup date is not yet determined.
Preston (4-3): PHS picked up a solid victory over North Marion 6-4 on Thursday of last week but followed that with a 3-2 defeat to Fairmont Senior on Friday.
The Knights trailed Robert C. Byrd 1-0 on Monday before a weather delay but will continue the week with contests against Philip Barbour and Bridgeport.
Clay-Battelle (6-3): The Cee-Bees are winners of four consecutive games after opening the campaign 3-3. The two most recent victories have both come in the eighth inning as C-B defeated Trinity Christian 3-2 in the Mon County Classic on Friday, followed by a 2-1 win over Cameron on Monday evening.
C-B will host Jefferson-Morgan on Wednesday and Magnolia on Thursday with a four-game streak on the line.
Trinity Christian (6-7): After beginning the season 4-2, the Warriors have dropped five of their last seven games with dropped contests to Clay-Battelle and Lewis County over the weekend.
TCS will aim to return to the win column on Wednesday evening against Notre Dame at Mylan Park.
Softball Morgantown (10-7): MHS defeated Jefferson 11-2 on Friday before dropping consecutive contests with a loss to University and the rematch against Jefferson on Saturday in the Mon County Classic The Mohigans responded with a 4-1 victory over Weir on Monday. They will look to continue to build momentum, visiting Wheeling Park on Thursday, Preston on Friday, and Washington for a doubleheader on Saturday.
University (12-2-1): The Hawks continued their strong start to 2025 defeating Morgantown and Jefferson on Saturday before traveling south to Myrtle Beach for the week.
UHS defeated Brighton (N.Y.) 8-0 on Monday before a 2-2 tie in a weather-shortened contest. The Hawks will play three more games this week in as many days before flying back home.
Preston (1-6): The Knights continued a tough beginning to the season with a one-run defeat to Fairmont Senior last week, 13-12. They trailed RCB by one run on Monday before a weather delay and will battle Philip Barbour, Bridgeport, Liberty, and Morgantown to close the week.
Clay-Battelle (2-9): The Cee-Bees picked up their second win of the season on Monday over Valley 11-9. They will continue their week with contests against Trinity-Christian and Bealsville, followed by a doubleheader with Toronto (Oh.) on Saturday.
Trinity Christian (6-3): The Warriors picked up a pair of victories over the weekend with a 1-0 win over Paden City on Friday and a 17-4 defeat of Tygarts Valley on Monday.
TCS will face Madonna on Wednesday before a doubleheader with Clay-Battelle on Thursday to end the week.
Boys lacrosse Morgantown (6-2): MHS suffered its first two defeats of the season last week with an 18-7 loss to South Fayette (Pa.) and a one-goal defeat to South Glenn (Oh.) 13-12.
Despite the dropped games, the Mohigans are still one of the top teams in West Virginia despite an unbeaten record amongst competition within state lines. This week, they will aim to continue that trend with games against in-state competition as Fairmont Senior visits Pony Lewis Field on Tuesday night before John Marshall does so on Thursday.
University (8-2): In a rematch from last season's state tournament, UHS defeated George Washington 6-4 on the road, earning a crucial victory heading into the back half of the calendar.
Will Harper led UHS with three goals. Mason Kemper and Aidan McClintock each scored a goal. Max Travis scored his fourth long pole defensive goal of the season. Maxwell Walker added two assists, and Nicholas Joseph also added an assist.
Girls lacrosse Morgantown (5-5): MHS made it two wins in a row with a 14-3 victory over Fairmont Senior last week. The Mohigans will travel to the University on Thursday evening, aiming to avenge a one-goal loss on April 2.
University (9-0): The defending state champions remained unbeaten last week with two decisive victories over Preston 21-1 and St. Albans 18-1.
On Thursday, the Hawks will welcome crosstown rival Morgantown to Baker's Ridge for a huge matchup.
