MUNCIE — For the first time since 2018, the Westview Warriors will play for a semistate championship.

The No. 3 Warriors (26-1) will play Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (16-11) for the 2A North Semistate title at the Muncie Fieldhouse Saturday at 8 p.m. Westview, which has won 25-straight games, is looking for its first trip to state since 2014.

Placing the Warriors in the championship game was their 65-62 nail-biting win over No. 9 Lapel (21-6) in the second semifinal games in Muncie. Westview led the Bulldogs 63-62 but missed back-to-back free throws with 38 seconds to play.

Lapel dribbled down the court trailing by one. Bulldogs guard Liam Ko pulled up from midrange but was off the mark. Westview’s Austin Schlabach pulled down the board before Lapel’s Owen Garber attempted to rip it away. The baseline official blew his whistle with 10 seconds to play and signaled for a jump ball in Westview’s direction.

“I thought it looked kind of quick, but I also thought there were maybe a couple travels on both ends that weren’t called,” Westview head coach Chandler Prible said. “Jump ball call happened to be quick, but it happened to be in our favor.”

Kaden Grau was fouled with nine seconds remaining on the inbounds pass and sunk both shots. Lapel attempted a corner three and a second, and more rushed, one from the opposite corner, but both missed as time expired for a Westview 65-62 win.

“It was not pretty,” Prible said. “We have a lot of things to clean up here in five, six hours to be able to compete for a semistate championship.”

Westview trailed early in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs sunk a trio of three-pointers to build a 12-6 lead and force a Westview timeout less than halfway into the introductory quarter.

The Warriors responded by scoring 16 of the last 24 points in the frame, taking a 22-18 lead into the second period. Schlabach had 10 points during that run.

In the second quarter, Lapel failed to make a three-pointer until the final seconds. Part of that was due to the Warriors’ adjustments.

“That was our big focus was that we needed to start closing out closer to shooters,” Prible said. “It was one of those things where these guys hadn’t seen these players before and maybe had to learn from in-game action.”

Westview built an 11-point advantage until Lapel’s Devin Craig nailed a triple near the halftime buzzer. At the break. Westview led 37-29.

The Bulldogs rallied in the second half by speeding up the Westview offense and forcing four turnovers from the Warriors. A mistake-prone third quarter from Westview aided Lapel. The Warriors fouled thrice on three-point shots and the game was tied at 44-44 at one point.

The Bulldogs scored seven points from those perimeter fouls and trailed 52-45 entering the final frame.

“We looked incredibly well-coached, didn’t we,” Prible said with a smirk. “It is survive of the fittest and that’s what we did. We were thankful that we were able to build up enough of a lead at different points in the game to then have those mistakes not cost us totally.”

“We had mentioned earlier in the game that we are very similar to that team,” he said. “We usually [block driving lanes and tip passes] against other people. They are able to do the same thing. They can get in passing lanes; they make passing angles tough.”

Westview held strong against a furious rally from Craig, who scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half.

On the other end, Grau and Schlabach (who combined for 25 first-half points) scored just two field goals the rest of the way. Pierce Yoder and Bryce Yoder stepped up and canned a few deep shots.

“Bryce, were telling him ‘You’re taking good shots. Stay confident and keep taking open shots. That’s good for our offense,” Prible said. “Then he buries a big one in the second half. I’m really proud of him as a freshman to come in and persevere through the early-game struggles.”

Those shots were good enough to protect the Warriors lead the rest of the way.

Westview was led by Schlabach (23 points), Grau (20), Pierce Yoder (11), Daniel Yoder (8) and Bryce Yoder (3). The Warriors were 21-of-43 from the floor and 7-of-16 from deep. They swished 16-of-20 shots at the line.

Lapel was led by Craig (22 points), Garber (14), Tyler Cash (9), Luke Jones (8), Ko (7) and Quinn Wilkins (2). The Bulldogs were 23-of-50 from the floor and 5-of-19 from deep. They shot 10-of-15 at the line.

In the first semistate game, Bishop Luers defeated No. 2 Oak Hill 68-64. Senior Carmani Davis scored 24 points and six triples.

Westview has its plans for scouting Luers and getting rested before the semistate finale.

“We’ll go back to the hotel,” Prible said. “My assistants have been looking ahead so they have scouting reports on Bishop Luers already. We’ll rewatch the game from earlier today and we’ll watch games from the past too. Hopefully our guys will just rest that whole time. We’ve got food that’s on the way. We have a lot of people chipping in and taking care of things.”

This story will be updated following the 2A North Semistate Championship.
