Penn State quarterback Drew Allar overcame a bit of a slow start to his NFL Combine experience to put together an encouraging display in front of the NFL scouting community. Overall, Allar, who suffered a season-ending injury midway through the 2025 season, showed why he is still a strong candidate to be selected in one of the early rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft this April.
CBS Sports graded Allar's performance with a "B," which feels fair given the rocky start to the on-field activities for the experienced starter. As he has often done in games, Allar eventually got in his groove and thrived with more consistency and better results. It is worth recognizing how long Allar has been out of action coming in to the combine, and it was encouraging to see his results improve as the event continued.
Allar will get a chance to improve on his results at Penn State's pro day event later this spring.
Penn State's dynamic running back duo of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen are heading to play at the next level, but the combine experience was a bit of a mixed bag. For starters, Singleton showed up to the event in a boot as he recovers from a broken foot injury at the Senior Bowl. Allen opted out of the testing at the combine but did participate in some of the on-field workouts. Overall, Allen put together some good stuff for scouts, enough so that CBS Sports graded his combine performance with a "B".
"A powerful runner who scored double-digit touchdowns in three of his four seasons at Penn State, Allen isn't the most graceful pass catcher, but he avoided drops and looked comfortable in the rushing drills," CBS Sports noted.
But what about the defensive players representing Penn State? Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zane Durant were among the first Nittany Lions to go through the combine circuit with the defensive linemen earlier in the week. Each left a solid impression on scouts and others paying attention to the results. Dennis-Sutton received some high praise as one of the overall NFL combine winners, according to one USA TODAY writer.
"[Notching] a time under 7 seconds augurs well for edge rushers, and Dennis-Sutton cleared that bar with his 6.90-second mark," USA TODAY's Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz noted in his combine wrapup. "Elsewhere, he led the edge rushers with a 10-foot, 11-inch broad jump while also helping his cause with his figures in the 40 (4.64 seconds) and vertical leap (39½ inches). There's a clear schism between his testing and demonstrated pass-rush abilities, as Dennis-Sutton more resembled a hustling, rigid base end than a dynamic disruptor during his time with the Nittany Lions."
Middlehurst-Schwartz also noted that Zane Durant could easily have made his final cut of winners from the NFL combine. Both Dennis-Sutton and Durant will be players to watch at a Penn State pro day event later on leading up to the draft.
