POMPTON LAKES – No. 4 seed Pompton Lakes claimed the North 1, Group 1 sectional championship Friday with a 3-0 win over No. 7 seed Waldwick. It marked Pompton Lakes’ second sectional title in three years after winning its group in 2024 and fifth all time. The Cardinals’ path to the championship wasn’t easy. After dispatching No. 13 seed Kinnelon and run-ruling No. 5 seed Pequannock, they upset No. 1 seed Wallkill Valley 5-4. Because of Waldwick also beating No. 2 seed New Milford and No. 3 seed Park Ridge, Pompton Lakes earned home field advantage for the sectional final as well. There wasn’t much offense in the game. Senior right-hander Jon Popovich shut down Waldwick, amassing seven strikeouts and no runs in a full seven innings.Pompton Lakes scored its first run in the second on a wild pitch, then added two more in the third on an error by Waldwick. That was all it needed to close out the win because of Popovich’s dominance, sending Pompton Lakes to the state semifinals, where it will play the North 2 region winner.
