Spanish authorities have identified the individual responsible for a racist incident during Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey match away to Albacete on January 14 at the Carlos Belmonte.

In a statement released Sunday, the Castilla-La Mancha Police Headquarters confirmed that a spectator threw a banana peel in the direction of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. during play — an act police described as a gesture “understood as a clear sign of racism.”

According to the police, the person was identified from the stands using the security protocols and technical surveillance measures put in place for the fixture. Law enforcement has now recommended administrative punishment under Spain’s Law 19/2007, legislation aimed at combating violence, racism, xenophobia, and intolerance in sport.

The police statement framed the case as part of Spain’s broader procedures for detecting and pursuing discriminatory behavior at sporting events — in a season where multiple stadiums across the country have been hit with similar incidents.

Vinicius has repeatedly been the target of racist abuse in Spain over the past several seasons, with Real Madrid consistently calling for stronger action from both football authorities and the justice system.
