Nico Harrison was dismissed as general manager of the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday, Nov. 11 after four seasons in the position.
His departure, amidst the criticism of the Feb. 2 trade that saw Luka Dončić moveto the Los Angeles Lakers, has left a profound impact on the franchise – now even more so, considering the disappointing start to the 2025-26 NBA season.
Following the Dončić trade, which has been dubbed "the worst trade in NBA history," Harrison faced a wave of backlash from critics, analysts and especially fans in Dallas. The deal, which sent Dončić to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick, led to fans protesting outside the American Airlines Center, where the Mavericks play their home games.
Their chants of 'Fire Nico!' have become a regular occurrence, even during Monday night's home game against the Milwaukee Bucks, which the Mavericks dropped 116-114 to fall to 3-8 (2-5 at home) on the season. Mavericks owner and and team governor Patrick Dumont was in attendance at the game, according to ESPN.

BEST FITS TO REPLACE HARRISON: Will Mavericks make Dirk Nowitzki next GM?
Dumont, whose family purchased a majority share of the franchise from Mark Cuban, has been candid about the discussion surround the Dončić trade. And Harrison's argument, that re-signing Dončić would be a poor investment due to the player's ongoing injuries and conditioning issues, is now a source of deep regret.
In a letter to Mavericks fans on Tuesday, Nov. 11, Dumont wrote, "As fans of this franchise, you have every right to demand a commitment to success from us.
"No one who is associated with the Mavericks organization is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season. You have high expectations for the Mavericks, and I share them with you."
Several months after the surprising blockbuster trade that sent Dončić to the Lakers, Harrison consistently emphasized, "defense wins championships" as his rationale for the decision.
At that time, Harrison stated he had "no regrets about the trade," insisting that his role was to make choices that were in the best interest of the Mavericks, even if some of those decisions might be unpopular.
The main reason for the Mavericks trading Dončić to the Lakers was concerns about his health, work ethic, and injury history.
