PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers played host to the Utah Jazz on the second night of a back-to-back on Wednesday as they looked to erase a 40-point loss on Tuesday to the San Antonio Spurs from their memory. The lowly Jazz entered with the second-worst record in the West and on a 6-game skid so this was the perfect chance for the Sixers to move on.
The Sixers held a double-digit lead early, but once again had issues in the third quarter as the Jazz had taken the lead behind Keyonte George and Ace Bailey. While it looked like the short-handed Sixers were going to take an unfortunate loss, they dug deep and rallied to win it 106-102 and get back in the win column.
Tyrese Maxey had 25 points and six assists for Philadelphia while Jabari Walker hopped off the bench and had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Quentin Grimes added 16 points and five rebounds, Adem Bona had 12 and five boards, Tyrese Martin had eight, and Dominick Barlow added seven points.
Here are the player grades following the win:
The Jazz are a young team trying to find their way in the NBA which makes life a little easier for Maxey after having to face a tough Spurs team on Tuesday. He was able to knock down some 3s early to set the tone and he got into the paint often in this one. Maxey was able to find some open looks in this one and found some offensive rhythm and get the scoreboard moving. When the Jazz had taken control of the game and the Philadelphia fan base on edge, Maxey came up with some big buckets in the third to make sure the Sixers were not going to let this one slip away.
It was a quiet start for Grimes in this one. He had a couple of open triples to start the night, but was unable to convert on either one before he finally got on the scoreboard when he put the ball on the floor and attacked the basket. That moment seemed to get him going as he realized he could explode into the paint and find open looks. He did a good job of bringing aggression into the paint and finding looks at the basket. With that being said, the Sixers need him to find his 3-point shot again on a nightly basis as they need him to figure it out in that respect. Either way, his ability to attack the basket was huge in this one. Especially, down the stretch.
Receiving the start in this one, Watford was aggressive with the basketball as he worked his way into the paint, but he had some trouble converting against Utah’s big men. He was able to find some offense as the game wore on while also helping on the glass and being a secondary ball-handler next to Maxey. He didn’t have a huge night, but Watford was able to do some good things in this one.
The energetic big man scored five points in the first quarter of this one which was already better than what he did on Tuesday so the Sixers will take that. Barlow was in the right spots defensively and bothered the Jazz when they tried to attack the paint. He had a solid night in terms of being able to make some hustle plays and help the Sixers get some extra possessions.
The Jazz are the perfect matchup for Bona who plays with so much energy and activity. He was all over the place in this one as he attacked the glass with aggression and protected the rim well enough to make Utah’s perimeter players think twice about going into the paint. He had a solid night. Not a great one, but he made some positive plays in this one to help Philadelphia.
The Sixers received a big night from Walker in this one. He was able to produce a big number in garbage time of Tuesday’s loss and was able to bring it to the floor in this one. He knocked down four corner triples in his initial stint as he forced the Jazz to pay attention to him. He then put the ball on the floor and was able to get to the foul line as it was a good offensive night for Walker overall.
The initial stint was a tough one for Martin as he missed both of his open looks from beyond the arc and had two turnovers. He did give Philadelphia some ball-handling in this one and was able to provide some minutes so that’s a big help. He was able to knock down some big 3s in the fourth quarter of this one to help the Sixers re-take the lead and make things happen on the offensive end of the floor.
The initial run for Drummond off the bench just produced a rebound. He did well enough to give the Sixers some minutes, but it wasn’t anything real productive. He got a bucket to fall in the second half, but he missed some open corner 3s in this one.
The initial run for Payne didn’t produce much as he missed two open looks from deep and had an assist. He didn’t produce much in the second half either.
The Sixers turned to Edwards early and he was able to knock down another triple which was a big help in this one when considering all of the offense that was sidelined in this one. He had a hustle bucket and also made plays with his passing. The Sixers will take this type of production from him.
The Sixers turned to the future Hall of Famer with all of the players they were missing in this one and his first run was solid. He was helpful on the glass and he drew a foul to get to the line. He missed some open 3s, but Lowry had some good moments in this one.
