The Pittsburgh Steelers will enter the 2026 NFL season as a potential contender in the AFC. However, there are a lot of question marks surrounding the team.
Obviously, the question about Aaron Rodgers remains. At 42 years old, can he still be the kind of quarterback that powers a team to the Super Bowl? That question will need to be answered early on in the season.
Another big question mark comes on the defensive side of the football.
Entering the 2026 season, the Steelers have decided to change Jalen Ramsey's position. He will move from cornerback, where he has played his entire NFL career, to safety. Ramsey will be asked to do something new for the first time in his career at 31 years old.
Last season, Ramsey played a key role for the Pittsburgh defense. He appeared in all 17 games, racking up 88 tackles, three sacks, an interception, and eight defended passes.
With that being said, the Steelers have been given reason to be concerned about Ramsey's position switch. A former Pro Bowl safety has spoken out about the difficulties of making such a change.
Donte Whitner was the former safety who spoke out.
“They moved Jalen Ramsey from corner to safety. Everybody can’t make that transition because it takes a different skillset,” Whitner said. “The angles that you approach the ball carrier are different. The footwork and the efficiency in the middle of the field and the deep half and in the quarter of the field is different. The communication is enormous at the safety position.”
Throughout his career, Ramsey has been a defensive star. While he is making a difficult position change, his overall skill and football IQ will be extremely helpful.
Ramsey has always been a sure tackler. He has racked up 622 total tackles throughout his 152-game career to go along with six sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 25 interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and 116 defended passes.
If there was a player who could make this kind of change late in his career, it would be Ramsey. But, it would be reasonable to anticipate some mistakes as well.
Hopefully, Ramsey can figure things out quickly at his new position. If he can't, the Steelers could have a glaring issue in their secondary before the season even begins.
