Rivalries are usually born out of teams that play in the same division or the same conference, but there’s something special about battles for a state. Major League Baseball has the iconic Subway Series between the New York Mets and New York Yankees, the NFL has the battle for Pennsylvania featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers, and that same rivalry exists in college football between Penn State and Pitt.
The Nittany Lions currently lead the series with an all-time record of 53-44-4, but the rivalry has been largely disjointed for decades now. The two teams used to face off every single season, but that tradition changed after they met in 1992, and now they’ve only played each other eight times since then, with the last meeting coming in 2019.
Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi was asked about rekindling the rivalry during the ACC’s media days, to which he responded, “I actually texted {Pat Kraft} this morning… I was asking what I should say today if I got that question, but we’d love to get it going.”
The question was prompted by a reporter letting Narduzzi know that there is a lot of juice in the fanbases for the teams to line up against each other. We haven’t heard anything from Penn State on the matter yet, but it sounds like nearly everyone involved is itching for The Keystone Classic to make a return.
The Nittany Lions are scheduled to have their media day at the end of this month, so expect a similar question for someone from the team. Not many Penn State staff members or executives were around for the last meeting between these teams, so the next meeting between these teams will likely start an entirely new chapter in the rivalry.
New Penn State head coach Matt Campbell will be practically guaranteed to be asked the question about rekindling an in-state rivalry with Pittsburgh, and we will pay close attention to his response. Campbell knows the importance of a good in-state rivalry. As head coach at Iowa State, Campbell led the Cyclones in an early-season in-state rivalry with Iowa.
Penn State and Pittsburgh will compete against each other in men's basketball this upcoming season, however. Penn State and Pitt will meet in Philadelphia in The Palestra this November for Penn State's home-away-from-home game in the iconic venue.
