Major League Baseball announced its All-Star rosters over the weekend, an announcement that always comes with its fair share of criticism. Guys have to deal with getting snubbed, an unfortunate situation for some small-market clubs like the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates, who have done a lot of good over the past few months, weren't expected to be heavily involved in the All-Star Game. Ultimately, outside of a guy like Paul Skenes, it's always fair to question whether anybody else will even be selected in Pittsburgh. That's just the harsh reality of playing for a small-market team, and something the Pirates have probably grown accustomed to.
Still, there are multiple players on the Pirates roster that we could strongly argue deserved a chance to be in the All-Star Game. One of them is veteran second baseman Brandon Lowe, who has been one of the better players in Major League Baseball at his position over the past few months.
Speaking to reporters recently about Major League Baseball's announcement, with the fans and players not voting him in, Lowe sounded a bit upset, but he's very thankful that guys in the clubhouse, and his skipper, Don Kelly, continue to go to bat for him and say all the right things.
“It means more coming from the guys in here, I think, more than anything,” Lowe said, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “... It means more [because] these guys see you every single day, they’re around you, they understand what’s going on in this clubhouse and all that kind of stuff.”
“I think that as we continue to fight for that respect, hopefully that comes along with some individual accolades,” Kelly said. “... Feel like there were a few guys in the clubhouse that deserved to be All-Stars too, along with Paul. As a team, we just need to continue to go out there and fight and fight to earn that respect and win baseball games.”
I know the All-Star Game isn't what it once was, and it isn't even as fun to watch at times as it has been in years past, at least in the earlier ages of the game.
However, it's still a great honor for guys like Lowe to get an opportunity to be in it. With how deserving he's been of it, as he's been one of the better-hitting second basemen in baseball once again, I can see why there's some frustration from people in Pittsburgh.
