The Pirates selected the contract of right-handed pitch Khristian Curtis ahead of game 1 of their Saturday, July 18 doubleheader with the Cleveland Guardians; the club will then reinstate right-hander Wilber Dotel from the 15-day injured list ahead of game 2. Dotel was placed on the IL with a right lat strain on June 13. Selecting Curtis’ contract requires a 40-man roster spot, so the Pirates moved center fielder Oneil Cruz to the 60-day injured list in order to create a spot.
Curtis, 24, has a 4.96 ERA with 97 strikeouts across 74.1 innings this season, making 18 appearances (16 starts) between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates selected him in the 12th round of the 2023 MLB Draft; MLB Pipeline currently ranks him as their No. 21 prospect.
Dotel made nine appearances across two stints with the Pirates prior to getting hurt and went 1-2 with a 5.89 ERA. The rookie had a 1.08 ERA through his first seven appearances before he was tagged for 10 runs in 1.2 innings over his last two appearances before his injury.
Dotel made three relief appearances between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis while on a rehab assignment and combined to allow one run on three hits in 4.2 innings. He walked three batters and struck out seven.
The Pirates optioned fellow rookie right-hander Antwone Kelly to Indianapolis following Sunday’s game against the Brewers. Kelly has made two appearances for the Pirates this season and has allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings.
