The Pittsburgh Pirates have a chance to make a run for the postseason this year and could pursue some help at the MLB trade deadline.
The one position they have been linked to this summer is the bullpen. A new high-leverage reliever, or a closer, would be ideal. But that might not be all the Pirates could wind up pursuing this summer. Offensive upgrades are still on the table, too.
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report proposed a trade idea for the Pirates that would send four very valuable prospects, but not Seth Hernandez, to land 25-year-old shortstop Zach Neto from the Los Angeles Angels.
"The Trade Package: OF Edward Florentino (No. 27 on B/R/ Top 100), SS Wyatt Sanford (No. 81 on B/R Top 100), 3B Murf Gray, RHP Antwone Kelly," Reuter proposed.
This trade package for Neto, the 25-year-old Angels shortstop under club control through the 2029 season, would be very interesting.
First of all, landing Neto would make for a very fascinating move. He's a shortstop, and with Konnor Griffin already the long-term shortstop, one of Griffin or Neto would have to change positions.
Neto could slide to third base or second base if Brandon Lowe leaves in free agency. But if Lowe stays, the Pirates could field an infield of Neto at third, Griffin at shortstop, and Lowe at second base.
That would be a fantastic core of infielders for many years to come. Neto has a .757 OPS this season with 19 home runs, 97 hits, and 2.7 bWAR for the Angels in 418 at-bats. However, he does lead the AL in strikeouts with 149, which is a bit worrying.
Reuter's trade idea to land Neto would have the Pirates giving up some very valuable prospects, headlined by Florentino. That's the kind of prospect the Pirates would surely prefer to keep, even in pursuit of someone as good as Neto.
Including Florentino or Hernandez in a trade would likely not be in the cards for the Pirates, unless it landed someone like Mason Miller, who'd be a true superstar upgrade.
Neto is good, but probably not good enough to warrant the Pirates giving up such a large haul to land him. This would be a very risky trade idea for the Pirates, and one that Ben Cherington probably would avoid.
However, while risky, adding Neto would tell the fans that the Pirates believe in this team, and that they're ready to seriously invest in the roster to pursue not just a postseason berth, but potentially a World Series appearance.
