Paul Skenes received a quick hook and the Pirates’ bats were silenced in a 2-0 loss to the Marlins at loanDepot Park on Tuesday night.

Scoring Plays​

Bottom 3rd, 1-0 MIA: Esteury Ruiz hit a one-out solo home run off Paul Skenes (9-11) to get the Marlins (61-59) on the board. Skenes left a 95.5 mph fastball up in the zone over the plate and Ruiz turned on it to send the ball over the left field fence.

Bottom 5th, 2-0 MIA: Skenes hit Ruiz with a pitch and the Marlins No. 9 hitter stole second base. He scored when Otto Lopez reached on an infield single and advanced 90 feet on a throwing error from shortstop Jacob Gonzalez, who made a diving stop.

Esteury Ruiz’s home run was all the Marlins needed. The Pirates (58-63) didn’t have a runner reach scoring position all game.

Player of the Game​

Marlins starter Eury Pérez (6-9) blanked the Pirates across a career-high-tying seven innings. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out seven.

He threw 37 pitches when he couldn’t escape the first in his Opening Day start against the Mets and threw 64 pitches in a rain-shortened start against the Rays on April 18.
