The Pittsburgh Pirates have the fifth overall pick and will have some options to add another high-end prospect to the system.
The MLB Draft often sees top prospects slide due to how much of a signing bonus they want, which will shake up the draft. Ahead of the MLB Draft, the Pirates will have been connected to plenty of prospects with the fifth overall pick.
Yet, MLB analyst Keith Law of The Athletic released his latest mock draft and had Pittsburgh selecting 6-foot-5 right-hander Jackson Flora out of UC Santa Barbara.
“This pick is based solely on the scenario that has unfolded above. I imagine this would be an absolute dream for the Pirates, picking fifth and getting the best pitcher on the board,” Law wrote in an article published on Wednesday.
Flora is 21-years-old and has been dominant at UC Santa Barbara this season as he’s 12-0 with a 1.06 ERA in 16 starts this season, including two complete games.
Given that Flora is 21, he likely could reach the MLB rather quickly and give Pittsburgh another young starting pitcher to build around.
The 2026 MLB Draft is set for July 11-13 in Philadelphia.
