This will be Ben Cherington's seventh trade deadline as general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. And for the first time, he's in a position to buy rather than sell.

Cherington has been more aggressive since the beginning of last offseason, adding significant talent over the winter and promoting top prospect Konnor Griffin just one week into the regular season.

Accordingly, Pirates beat reporter Noah Hiles expects Cherington to keep his foot on the gas with Pittsburgh fighting for a playoff spot.

If there was ever a year for the Pirates to go for it at the trade deadline, it's this year, says @_NoahHiles of @BuccoTerritory.

"If there were ever a year for them to go for it, it'd be this year," Hiles said on Tuesday's episode of "Foul Territory." "I think they're gonna be a little bit more aggressive than many would expect... I wouldn't be shocked if I saw this team make some sort of aggressive move and add a guy with a couple of years of control and add on to this core that they've been building."

Hiles said the Pirates' biggest need at the Aug. 3 deadline is right-handed relief pitching, which is what many other teams need as well. Pittsburgh's righty relievers have struggled this year with a 4.71 ERA, which ranks 23rd in baseball.

If the Pirates can bolster their bullpen and improve their defense as well, they should be in good shape down the stretch with their elite offense and starting pitching.
