Pirates Handed Concerning Update On Oneil Cruz originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will be without star outfielder Oneil Cruz for the foreseeable future.
Cruz was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 10, retroactive to June 8 due to left hand fourth and fifth metacarpal non-displaced fractures. At the time, there was no clear timeframe for his return, but on Sunday, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington confirmed Cruz will likely be out four to six weeks.
“That’s the rough timeline that I’ve been given,” Cherington said on 93.7 The Fan on Sunday, via TribLive. “Knowing Oneil, he will play through pain. I’m confident in saying that. He has done that a lot. If and when he feels he can get back out there, he’s going to do it. Obviously, with the hand, given how important hands are to a hitter, we want to make sure that we’re taking care of this thing so he can be a threat for the rest of the season.”
Cruz is hitting .264 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs this season, as he’s been a key part of the Pirates' offense. With Cruz out of the lineup, Jake Mangum will likely see more playing time in center field.
As for the Pirates, Pittsburgh lost on Sunday to the Miami Marlins to lose the series and fall to 36-36 on the season.
