The Pittsburgh Pirates suffered a heartbreaking 11-9 loss to the Houston Astros on Wednesday.
Pittsburgh had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Pirates allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh and eight runs in the bottom of the eighth to suffer a loss, which pitcher Paul Skenes says is unacceptable.
“We can’t lose this one today,” Skenes said postgame. “It stings a little bit. Putting up nine runs, you should win that game every time. It doesn’t feel good for me. I know it doesn’t feel good for the other pitchers who threw today. There are times when we will pick up the offense, and there are times where we won’t. Tonight was one of those nights. It’s a little unfortunate, but it’s why they give us 162 [games].”
Pirates manager Don Kelly, meanwhile, said it was a frustrating loss for the team, but is confident they will bounce back.
“Any time you lose a game like that, it's frustrating,” Kelly said. “(Montgomery and Soto) have been so good for us this year. That one just got away. Have to find a way to bounce back (Thursday).”
Pittsburgh looked like they were well on their way to winning their fifth straight and taking the series against the Astros. Yet, the Pirates have now blown 12 saves, which is tied for the third-most in the MLB.
Following the loss, the Pirates will look to win the series on Thursday at 8:10 p.m. ET.
The Pirates are 33-29 and in third place in the NL Central, but remain holding onto a Wild Card spot.
