Paul Skenes pitched like the ace he is against the New York Mets' star-studded lineup on Monday, allowing just one run on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings. However, the Pittsburgh Pirates' bullpen and offense came up short in the 4-3 loss.

The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year kept the trio of Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso in check, as they were a collective 1-for-8 with a walk against him. He allowed his only run on a double in the fourth inning by Jeff McNeil, which plated Brandon Nimmo.

Skenes complimented the aforementioned trio on Tuesday, via SNY.

"When they're bad, they're still good," the right-hander said. "All three of those guys are those guys. Over the course of a season, guys are going to slump a little bit. Their slumps aren't slumps."

Alonso leads the Mets (27-15) with a .318/.428/.604 slash line as well as 36 RBI, while he and Lindor are tied with nine homers. The latter star leads with 52 hits.

Alonso's batting average ranks ninth in baseball, and his RBI are the second-most. Additionally, the 30-year-old is fourth with a 1.032 OPS.

Lindor's slash line isn't far behind, checking in at .310.374/.510. On the other hand, Soto is only slashing .252/.372/.465 but has eight homers and 20 RBI.

Skenes is now 3-4 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in nine starts, further asserting himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball at just 22 years old. He outdueled New York southpaw David Peterson on Monday, who allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in six innings.
