West Genesee scored five runs over the first two innings and held on for a 5-1 victory over defending state champion Horseheads in a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA baseball semifinal Friday, June 12 at Binghamton's Mirabito Stadium.

Senior right-hander Colin Crinnin tossed a 5-hitter for West Genesee, escaping trouble in the fourth and fifth innings to limit the Blue Raiders to a single run. He struck out 5 and walked 3.

"I thought the kids battled," first-year Horseheads head coach Andy Scott said. "We got ourselves a run, 5-1 with the bases loaded with our 3 and 4 hitter up. It just didn’t pan out today."

Horseheads ace Cooper Ball, a junior right-hander, also went the distance. After giving up 5 runs on 5 hits in the first two innings, he shut out the Wildcats on 1 hit over their final four offensive innings. He struck out 8, walked 3, and hit a batter.

"I thought Cooper did a really nice job after the second inning," Scott said. "I went up to him and I just said, ‘Listen, you’ve got to just relax. Let’s go show what you’re made of.' He went down and he did a great job.

"Third, fourth, fifth, sixth inning I thought he showed a lot of character and handled adversity pretty well."

Dmitri Charlanow went 2-for-2 for Horseheads. AJ Sheehan singled home the Blue Raiders' lone run in the fifth inning.

Beckett Doane and pinch-hitter Ryan Weigand also had hits for Horseheads.

Nate Creaser's 2-run single down the left-field line gave West Genesee its final two runs of a three-run first inning. Nick Meluni scored on an error on the same play he stole second for a 4-0 lead, and Ben Jessen followed with an RBI single.

The Blue Raiders finished with a 19-8 record in their bid to become the first Section 4 baseball team to repeat as state champion. Horseheads advanced to the state semifinals for the first time in program history.

"I thought the kids did great winning two regional games, getting here, played a quality team and things didn’t bounce our way this year, but they should be really proud of themselves," Scott said.

Because of rain and lightning delays in the preceding game, Horseheads and West Genesee got started about 3 hours after the scheduled 4 p.m. start.

Section 3 champion West Genesee (21-4) advanced to the championship game against either Section 9's Cornwall or Section 8's Bellmore Merrick JFK.

"That’s a really good team," Scott said of West Genesee. "They’ve got 12 seniors, they played here last year in the final four. That’s a great program, he’s a great coach. When you get to the final four, you’re not going to have it on easy street."
