English broadcaster Piers Morgan leaped to the defense of Cristiano Ronaldo after the 41-year-old took the brunt of the blame in Portugal’s surprising 1-1 World Cup draw against DR Congo last week.
“So much pathetically gleeful ‘He’s finished!’ hate and mockery for @cristiano after one mediocre Portugal performance (by the whole team… all of which he will use as fuel in Portugal’s second game tomorrow night. He’s the for a reason, as he will show everyone,” Morgan posted on X.
Ronaldo had a game to forget against DR Congo, as the 41-year-old couldn’t make an impact in the final third and had zero defensive contributions, despite Portugal having a whopping 75% possession.
The Al-Nassr forward almost found the back of the net in the 68th minute after receiving a pass from Francisco Conceicao, but his chip shot went wide right. Ronaldo drew criticism for the play, as many believe he should’ve laid the ball off to Bruno Fernandes, who was open inside the penalty area.

After defending Cristiano Ronaldo, Piers Morgan chided Lionel Messi for missing an early penalty during Argentina’s World Cup contest against Austria.
“The - at missing penalties,” Morgan said on X.
But after failing to convert, Messi bounced back by scoring in the 38th minute and stoppage time to lead Argentina to a 2-0 win over Austria. In the process, the Inter Miami forward became the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer (18), leapfrogging Miroslav Klose.
As for Ronaldo, he will aim to win his first match in this year’s World Cup when Portugal faces Uzbekistan tomorrow at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. As of this writing, the 41-year-old striker has eight goals in 23 matches, so he still has ways to go to catch up to Messi in the record books.
