Reading High’s Esmeralda Tellez and Berks Catholic’s Kimberly Munoz are guaranteed state medals after they won their quarterfinal matches on Friday in the PIAA Girls Wrestling Championships in Hershey.
Tellez (32-0) defeated Peters Township’s Liliana Giulianelli, 4-1, scoring the deciding takedown with 30 seconds left in the match.
Munoz, a freshman, dominated Norwin’s Josephine Dollman in an 18-8 win.
Both will wrestle in the semifinals today at 7 p.m.
Tellez, a senior, will take on Morgan Reichard of Central Columbia in the semifinals. Reichard decisioned Souderton’s Mackenna Atkinson 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Munoz (42-1) will wrestle Jenny Gautreau of Owen J. Roberts, the top overall seed in the weight class, in the semifinals. Gautreau pinned Upper St. Clair’s Grace Nasman in 3:31 in the quarterfinals.
Tellez and Munoz can finish no worse than sixth with the top eight finishers getting medals.
Two other Berks wrestlers were in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Gov. Mifflin freshman Gianna Montegari lost by technical fall, 17-1, 2:48 to Marlee Solomon of Canon-McMillan.
At 148, Wyomissing junior Julionna Loux was pinned by Mount Lebanon’s Paige Jox in 1:29.
Montegari and Loux will wrestle in the third round of consolations at 9 p.m. today.
