Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Phillip Rivers will no longer be considered for the Buffalo Bills' head coaching opening.

Rivers interviewed with the Bills over the weekend for that vacancy.

However, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Monday that Rivers was withdrawing from consideration.

Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network added that "now isn't the right time" for Rivers and his family. Ian Rapoport added, "Not sure we've seen the last of him as a head coach candidate."

While it certainly may have been a surprise that Rivers was interviewed for the job, according to a report from Rapoport earlier this month, this was something that was brewing.

Rapoport stated that teams had been doing their research on Rivers as a possible head coaching candidate. This was also a process by some teams that went beyond just the 2025 hiring cycle.

At the end of the Colts' 2025 season, Rivers was asked about the idea of coaching in the NFL.

“There’s nothing of concrete with that. … This past month has taught me, you’re open to obviously anything, I guess.”

In an effort to make one last playoff push, Rivers came out of retirement after nearly five full seasons away from the game to start for the Colts after Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

The Colts would go 0-3 in those games, but Rivers provided stability at the quarterback position and gave Indianapolis a chance in those games.

Rivers' ability to step in on the fly after five years away from the NFL and find success, while often doing so pre-snap, where he made adjustments based on what the defense was doing, helps illustrate the deep understanding of the game that he has.

Rivers has spent his time away from the NFL coaching high school football.
