Phillies would be making worst move in franchise history if they trade for $151M dud originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

There are a lot of moves the Philadelphia Phillies can make over the next month or so that make a whole lot of sense for them. The Phillies, who have been one of the better teams in the National League for a lot of the season outside of a really rough start, are in a position where it makes too much sense to go out and add some valuable players.

At the same time, the Phillies also have to ensure that they don't put themselves in a position where they make a move just to make a move. The last thing the Phillies want to do is take on a bad contract, which is why the latest suggestion of adding Matt Chapman just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

“Dave Dombrowski is always a name to watch closely at the trade deadline. When he trades, he often thinks big, and that could very well be the case with Philadelphia at 41-35 and only seven games back of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. Skubal makes sense for them — Dombrowski loves pitching — but adding another bat, perhaps Alec Bohm’s future replacement, makes sense as the Phillies also look for another outfielder and starting pitching,” Robert Murray wrote.

I like most of the moves Dombrowski has attempted in the past, but I also don't think it's unfair to suggest he's made some interesting ones that haven't really worked out.

Adding Chapman would only add to that list, though, as he's a below-average offensive player who has slowed down a ton over the past few years. Factor that in with his contract, and it just makes no sense to make this move.
