Philadelphia Phillies corner infielder Alec Bohm is having an underwhelming season. Across 418 at-bats, the 30-year-old has posted a .225 batting average, .283 on-base percentage, .642 OPS, 13 home runs and 62 RBIs.
Now in his seventh year as a member of the Phillies, his lackluster performance is coming at the worst possible time in his career. He will hit unrestricted free agency after the 2026 season, and finding a long-term contract will be difficult given how much of a liability he has been in Philadelphia’s lineup.
Bohm has shown he can be a productive hitter. He finished runner-up in National League Rookie of the Year voting in his debut season and earned an All-Star selection as recently as 2024, so the ability is there.
Bohm will not get an opportunity to get back on track for Saturday’s matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays. After a hitless performance during Friday’s series opener, interim manager Don Mattingly opted to move Bohm to the bench.
However, the reasoning behind the move, while it may have partly been to give Bohm a reset day, was primarily because the Phillies wanted to get Bryce Harper a day off the field at designated hitter while keeping Kyle Schwarber in the lineup at first base defensively, according to Paul Casella of MLB.com.
That leaves Bohm as the odd man out. With the addition of Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline, he now has to share time at third base with Bryson Stott, and first base is occupied by both Harper and Schwarber.
With Arraez now in the mix, Bohm will have to figure it out soon or risk seeing himself squeezed out of a consistent role entirely as the season winds down.
